1979 Week 11 | Washington Redskins 30 : St. Louis Cardinals 28

I had been a Redskin fan for

I had been a Redskin fan for nearly 10 years from Indiana (my dad tried to get me to be a Bears' fan, but they stunk at the time!). I was a young Marine from Indiana that was stationed in Quantico for Computer Science School; I ended up permanently stationed in Quantico until 1983, but I didn't know that I would stay in Quantico at that time. I had spent the weekend in DC with some buddies, and we were going to catch the Amtrak back to Quantico when a guy came onto the DC Metro. We struck up a conversation with the guy, and he said he had an extra ticket for the game; his wife was ill. He wondered if any of us were Redskin fans. Obviously, I continued on to RFK! When we got to RFK, we got to our seats in the upper deck. Little did I know that I would be watching my first Redskin game with a professional athlete! Mitch Kupchak at the time was a prominent member of the Washington Bullets, and he sat right next to me. He couldn't have been nicer. Remember, the Bullets were a solid club at the time, so Mitch was quite popular. It was funny to see people recognize him, then run down to get something to be signed, then come back. Mitch had quite a few cute girls come our way (the view was excellent). As he has gotten criticized by fans and media for the way he has generally managed the Lakers, I've thought about that day and I hate to see him go thru that. As far as the game goes, I remember it being back and forth, and the 'Skins won on a field goal by Moseley with less than a minute to play. RFK was rockin'!
