An RFK crowd was in a frenzy in anticipation of seeing the Redskins begin their title defense against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. And in the first half, the defending champs did not disappoint. Washington opened up a 23-3 halftime lead, holding Dallas to less than 100 yards of offense and dominating the clock.Unfortunately, the Cowboys were not a hated arch rival for no reason, and they pushed back into the game in the third quarter behind two long Danny White TD passes. Dallas took the lead early in the fourth, and scored again following a Theismann interception to make the score 31-23. The Skins scored a late TD to close the margin to one point, but there was no time for another drive, and the season opened with a disappointing loss.
