1984 NFC Divisional Playoffs | Washington Redskins 19 : Chicago Bears 23

The Redskins began the playoffs at home for the third straight year. But their opponent this time was a Chicago Bears team growing into their identity as a contender, and they would prove to be worthy of dethroning the two-time NFC champs.

The first half was close, but Chicago pulled out to 10-3 lead as their defense shut down Washington's offense. They struck quickly in the third quarter, scoring on a long pass to Willie Gault, making it 16-3. The Redskins offense was able to work through the Chicago pressure and answer with two third quarter drives ending in a Riggins TDs, but they could not hold the Bears from scoring. A late safety brought the score to 23-19, but the Chicago defense kept the Redskins from moving the ball into scoring position again. Theismann was sacked seven times in the game. The Redskins spent January without planning for a Super Bowl trip for the first time in two years.
