1987 Week 1 | Washington Redskins 34 : Philadelphia Eagles 24

Veteran QB Doug Williams, backing up the injured Jay Schroeder, came out on top in a shootout with the young Randall Cunningham. The Redskins got off to a quick start opening up a 10-0 first quarter lead behind a Williams-to-Monk TD, and holding on to a 17-10 halftime lead.

Washington appeared to break the game open by starting the third quarter with another drive ending in a TD run, growing the lead to 24-10. But the Eagles stormed back to tie, led by a Cunningham TD run and long fumble return. They could not keep the momentum going through the fourth quarter, and Washington added another Monk TD and a FG to pull away for a win.
