Washington and Detroit had played to a 3-3 tie midway through the second quarter when Gibbs, frustrated with Schroeder's decision making, benched him for Doug Williams. Williams responded by throwing two TD passes before halftime, one to Kelvin Bryant and one to Gary Clark.

The offense could not continue the scoring pace in the second half, but only needed to add another FG to hold off a Detroit rally and come away with a win.
