1989 Week 2 | Washington Redskins 37 : Philadelphia Eagles 42
Hopes of a strong start were dashed as Washington lost another game to a division opponent, again after holding a lead.
This time, the Redskins appeared to have the game in hand at halftime. Rypien threw two first quarter TDs and Gerald Riggs added a run as the Skins pulled ahead 20-7. The apparent dominance continued in the second quarter as Washington added a Gary Clark TD catch and a FG to hold a 30-14 halftime lead.
The second half featured an energized Randall Cunningham, as he threw four TDs to rack up 28 points for the Eagles. Washington could only muster a single Rypien-to-Monk TD and fell short in a stunning loss. Controversy was part of the defeat as one of Philadelphia's TDs was set up on a long fumble return during which the ball was illegally tossed forwards by Eagles defenders.
