1989 Week 5 | Washington Redskins 30 : Phoenix Cardinals 28

The Skins pulled to their first winning record of 1989 with a close victory over the Cardinals.

Washington opened a 13-0 margin, led by a Byner TD catch. Phoenix stormed back to take a 14-13 lead by halftime behind TD passes by ex Cowboys QB Gary Hogeboom.

St Louis widened their lead in the third quarter on a long TD run. But Mark Rypien led the offense on three scoring drives in the fourth quarter, including TD passes to Art Monk and Gary Clark, bringing Washington back to a 30-21 lead. The Cardinals answered with another TD pass from Hogeboom, but could not follow it up with a scoring drive and the Redskins came away winners.
