1992 9-7After the dominant performace in 1991, there was every reason to expect more success the following year. The core of the team was intact, and many veterans had elected to return for the opportunity to repeat as champions.
The season would not progress as easily for the Skins as the previous dream season. Things looked good early, as the team opened at 5-2. The team was never as consistent as the previous year, and Rypien struggled, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Three division wins late in the season allowed the Skins to squeak into the playoffs as a wild card team despite a 9-7 record. The Redskins won their wildcard game against Minnesota, but lost the semifinal game to San Francisco. In the offeseason, Gibbs initially appeared focused on maintaining the team, but in the spring he suddenly announced his retirement, citing health problems and a desire to spend time with his family. |
